July 31, 2024 Colin Lawson Comments 0 Comment

The nights are slowly beginning to draw in and it’s the perfect time for families to enjoy some spooky fun together. However, finding the right balance between scary and suitable for kids can be a bit of a challenge.

Fear not! We’ve scoured the depths of family-friendly frights to bring you a list of 10 horror movies that are perfect for young viewers and won’t leave them hiding under the bed.

1
Coraline (2009)

“Coraline,” the 2009 stop-motion masterpiece, is not your average bedtime story. It’s the tale of a young girl who finds a secret door to an alternate universe, which is like her real life but with more buttons and less parental supervision.

The film, directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman’s novella, is a visual feast that combines the charm of hand-crafted animation with the thrill of 3D effects. It’s like “Alice in Wonderland” meets “The Twilight Zone,” but with a sassy cat and a villain who really needs to see a manicurist.

With its dark humor and quirky characters, “Coraline” has stitched its way into the hearts of both kids and adults, proving that sometimes the grass isn’t greener on the other side—it’s just more… button-y.

2
Monster House (2006)

“Monster House,” the 2006 animated adventure shows what happens when a house decides to go rogue and become the neighborhood’s biggest, baddest bully. Imagine trying to sell that place: “Cozy three-bedroom, one monster, with open floor plan and spacious mouth… I mean, living room!”

It’s a tale of three plucky kids who discover that sometimes, the real ‘monster’ in ‘Monster House’ isn’t just the cranky old man next door, but his entire living, breathing abode.

And let’s not forget, this house has more mood swings than a teenager and an appetite for anything that dares to step on its lawn.

3
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Tim Burton’s classic a film where Halloween and Christmas collide in the most whimsical way! Imagine the confusion when Jack Skellington, a being more suited to spooking than ho-ho-hoing, tries to take over Santa’s job. It’s like a turkey trying to carve itself for Thanksgiving dinner!

With a dash of Tim Burton’s gothic flair and a sprinkle of holiday cheer, this movie is a recipe for a cult classic that’s been charming the striped socks off audiences since 1993.

4
ParaNorman (2012)

“ParaNorman,” the 2012 animated adventure, brings a whole new meaning to ‘family spirits’! Norman Babcock, the misunderstood protagonist, doesn’t just see dead people; he’s practically the ghost whisperer of middle school.

With a town cursed by a centuries-old witch and zombies popping up like daisies, Norman’s got more on his plate than just homework. It’s a good thing he’s got his new buddy Neil, because when it comes to ghostly grandmas and unruly undead, it takes more than a village—it takes a Norman!

And let’s not forget the groundbreaking animation; “ParaNorman” was the first stop-motion film to use a 3-D color printer for character faces, making it a real ‘graveyard smash’ in the animation world.

5
The Witches (1990)

“The Witches,” a 1990 cinematic concoction, brews up a dark fantasy with a dash of comedy and a pinch of horror, all stirred together by director Nicolas Roeg.

Based on Roald Dahl’s novel, the film casts a spell with Anjelica Huston’s bewitching performance, transforming children into mice and audiences into fans.

Despite Dahl’s own thumbs-down on the altered ending, the movie has scurried its way into cult classic status, proving that even witches can’t curse the power of nostalgia.

6
Hocus Pocus (1993)

This spellbinding comedy has enchanted audiences for decades. It’s the tale of the Sanderson Sisters, a trio of witchy siblings who are accidentally resurrected by a group of unsuspecting kids in Salem.

The film is a cauldron of laughs, with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy stirring up trouble and magic in equal measure.

It’s a Halloween classic that proves it’s not just a bunch of hocus pocus.

7
Gremlins (1984)

This 1984 classic is a tale of how a cute and fuzzy mogwai named Gizmo turns a small town upside down (through no fault of his own).

Remember, folks, always read the manual! If you don’t, you might end up with a bunch of gremlins wreaking havoc, and let’s be honest, who has time to deal with mischievous monsters during the holiday season?

It’s a story that teaches us valuable lessons: don’t feed your pets after midnight, avoid water like it’s the plague, and maybe, just maybe, stick to socks as Christmas gifts. After all, they’re less likely to try and take over the town.

8
Goosebumps (2015)

This 2015 movie, featuring Jack Black, is a spooktacular roller coaster that combines horror, comedy, and a dash of nostalgia for fans of the beloved book series.

Imagine every monster you thought was safely locked away in R.L. Stine’s books suddenly breaking free to wreak havoc on your quiet suburban life. That’s exactly what happens to young Zach, who teams up with Stine’s daughter and a delightfully quirky sidekick to save their town from a literal monster mash.

It’s like a Halloween party where the guests are a little too into their costumes.

9
Casper (1995)

“Casper,” the friendly ghost who just couldn’t say “boo” to a fly, made his big-screen debut in 1995, floating onto the scene with a heartwarming tale and some seriously cool spectral effects.

This ghostly youngster, with his knack for befriending rather than frightening, turned a haunted mansion into a hub of hilarity and heart. It’s no wonder the film spirited away a cool $288 million at the box office.

Let’s not forget the all-star cast that brought the manor’s mischief to life, with Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman leading the living. Casper may have been all about the afterlife, but this film was very much alive with fun and fantasy!

10
Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998)

“Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island” is the kind of movie that makes you question your snack choices—because let’s face it, Scooby Snacks might not cut it when you’re facing real-life zombies!

Released in 1998, this animated adventure reunites the Mystery Inc. gang as they explore the haunted Moonscar Island, only to find themselves in a gumbo of ghosts, werecats, and pirates.

It’s a spooktacular romp that proves once and for all that the only thing scarier than an unmasked villain is an unmasked villain with a pirate hat and a supernatural curse!

These movies strike the perfect balance between spooky and safe, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the Halloween spirit. So grab some popcorn, dim the lights, and get ready for a ghoulishly good time with these kid-friendly horror flicks!
