The Ghosts of Old York
York, known as one of the most haunted cities in England, carries a rich history that dates back to Roman times.
The ancient walls of York have witnessed countless events, and some say they retain the spirits of those who once roamed its streets.
One cannot explore the spectral legacy of York without mentioning the infamous York Minster. This grand cathedral is said to be home to several apparitions, including that of a lost Roman soldier who wanders its crypts. Visitors often report strange sensations and unexplained chills when touring this historic site.
Another notable haunt is the Golden Fleece Inn, reputed to be York’s most haunted pub. Patrons and staff alike have encountered the ghost of Lady Alice Peckett, wife of the former mayor of York, who is known to move items around and make her presence felt.
The Shambles, a well-preserved medieval street in York, also has its share of ghostly tales. Among them is the story of Margaret Clitherow, sometimes seen pressing her hands against the windows of the homes she once lived in before her tragic execution.
These stories are just a glimpse into the phantasmal world of Old York.
Whether one believes in ghosts or not, the tales add a layer of intrigue to this historic city and offer a unique way to connect with its past.
