Favourite Horror Movies 6 – Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
If you’re looking for a hugely entertaining film that combines belly laughs with a bit of gore, then “Tucker and Dale vs Evil” should be right up your alley! This 2010 comedy-horror flick turns the typical cabin-in-the-woods genre on its head, delivering a fresh and hilarious twist on horror tropes.
Let’s be honest; the comedy-horror category of filmmaking can be pretty hit or miss with some exceptionally poor examples (yes ‘Scary Movie’ franchise, we’re looking at you) but Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a 100% slam-dunk of a horror/comedy movie. Recommended to you with absolutely no reservations.

The movie follows the titular Tucker and Dale, two well-meaning hillbillies who are mistaken for murderous backwoods killers by a group of preppy college students. As Tucker and Dale try to enjoy their vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin, the misunderstandings pile up, leading to a series of laugh-out-loud deadly accidents.
What makes “Tucker and Dale vs Evil” so enjoyable is its clever subversion of horror expectations. The film plays with audience perceptions, making us root for the typically stereotyped ‘villains’ while poking fun at horror clichés. It’s a reminder not to judge a book by its cover—or in this case, a hillbilly by his overalls.
The chemistry between Alan Tudyk (Tucker) and Tyler Labine (Dale) is the heart of the movie. Their comedic timing and genuine warmth make you empathise with their characters’ plight, even as the body count inadvertently rises around them.
Trivia: A special feature on the DVD plays the movie from the college kids’ perspective, in which Tucker and Dale are murderous villains.
Director Eli Craig does a fantastic job balancing the comedy with moments of suspense, never letting the laughs undermine the thrills. The result is a film that’s as endearing as it is gruesome, and one that will leave you chuckling long after the credits roll, the wood-chipper and the bees nest scenes anyone?
So grab some popcorn (and maybe a friend to hide behind during the squirmier bits), and prepare for a rollicking good time with “Tucker and Dale vs Evil”. Just remember: it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt… or in this case, hilariously misunderstood. Tucker and Dale vs Evil: A Hilarious Take on Horror Tropes
